Enjoying Winter in Wisconsin
Lots of people complain about Wisconsin winters, not me ! I love it when there is snow on the ground. I guess it must remind me of my childhood when we had soooo much snow every winter. Skiing, building snow forts, snow days off of school, skating, sledding. Just bundling up and being outside in the cold crisp air with friends and family. And then, when my kids were growing up, packing up the suburban and heading to ski races all over Wisconsin. We always knew what the kids were doing all week-end ! These days, skiing, sledding and skating are not on my schedule, but snow-shoeing , hiking up ski hills to watch two of my grand children ski race and PAINTING in the outdoors are all high on my list of fun. I even love shoveling ! Especially at night when it is so quite and peaceful. Unfortunately, we have not had a lot of snow for the past few winters. But if there isn't natural snow on the ground, I can head out to the little ski hill where I learned to ski. Memories, crisp air, snow and shadows are my inspiration.
There are not many Wisconsin plein air artists who paint during the winter, but there is a long tradition of New England plein air artists who love painting in the snow as much as I do.
And some of my favorite French Impressionists also spent time painting in the snow. Pissarro and Monet among the best ! A fun fact : This painting that I did after our first snow of 2021 is now residing in Paris! I titled it "Effet de Neige" in honor of those French Impressionists and voila! A expat from Wisconsin, living in Paris bought it. She is missing Wisconsin winters! So, you see , I am not crazy for loving winter!
